Fallout: A Post-Nuclear RPG was released on October 10, 1997, 25 years ago. To mark this silver anniversary, Bethesda announced that Fallout 76 is open for free during the week.
Fallout 76 is very different from the original Fallout. The original was a fancy turn-based RPG set in a gritty post-war world, but Fallout 76 is a first-person multiplayer game with a focus on action rather than immersion and set against a somewhat more interesting backdrop. The game received fairly positive reviews when it was first released, it was “a beautifully designed world but a bit too repetitive”. Fallout 76 has come a long way, attracting 13 million players since launch to date, and earlier this year Bethesda announced a five-year roadmap for the game.

The Fallout 76 free trial week will begin on October 4 and run through October 11. To help beginners get started, Bethesda will also be releasing a survey quiz to help players find the pool that’s the best fit for them. Prime Gaming and Xbox Game Pass subscribers also get their own rewards, which are an Invaders From Beyond seasonal event and a celebratory Twitch live stream on October 7.
