Hello everyone! Welcome to this exciting discussion about Flyout, a unique one-man self-funded game. I’m the developer behind Flyout, and today I want to address some misconceptions and shed light on the amazing journey this game has taken. Are you ready? Let’s dive in!
The Beginning: From Showcase to Game
When I initially created Flyout, it was merely a showcase to demonstrate my skills to the game development branch in my university. Inspired by the likes of KSP, Flyout was never intended for release. However, as I continued working on the project, I became truly captivated by the idea of creating a game that combined the realistic flight simulations of DCS, Orbiter, and X-plane with the thrill of building your own vessels. The addiction took hold, and Flyout transformed into something much bigger than I ever anticipated.
Building from Scratch
To address any doubts, I want to emphasize that Flyout is not built upon any KSP code or assets. It has been meticulously crafted from scratch, ensuring a unique and independent gaming experience.
Innovative Building Mechanics
Drawing from my years of experience playing KSP, I have implemented building mechanics that I believe are the best fit for Flyout. While some may suggest using Minecraft blocks, the real differentiator lies in Flyout’s procedural parts. These innovative components not only enhance the gameplay but also significantly reduce the required part count.
Clearing Misconceptions: YouTube and Labels
Some of you may have noticed the peculiar labels assigned to Flyout’s YouTube videos. Let me clarify this for you. The labels you see below the videos are assigned by YouTube’s automatic content recognition system. Unfortunately, as Flyout is a relatively unknown game, the videos often get mislabeled as something else. Even if I explicitly mention “Flyout” in the game label, YouTube’s system does not recognize it accurately. This labeling system is designed to credit game developers through Let’s Play videos and other content. Rest assured, there’s nothing I can do to alter this situation.
Journeying Through Flyout: An Overview
So, what exactly is Flyout now, and what direction is it heading in? Currently, Flyout stands as an impressive modular flight simulator. Countless hours have been dedicated to developing a detailed aerodynamics solver that takes into account various factors such as wing sweep, thickness, leading and trailing edge devices, and aspect ratio. Similar to X-plane, the wings are divided into segments, and forces are calculated individually.
Moreover, Flyout offers a multiplayer mode that allows up to five people to experience the thrill of flying together in the same room. Although still a work in progress, this multiplayer feature has been reintroduced in the alpha 2 version.
The Engine Creation Mode
One aspect that has caught the attention of many players is the engine creation mode. While it is not yet integrated into the actual gameplay, rest assured that the same solver used in the premade engines will be utilized. I understand the eagerness surrounding this mode, and I assure you that its completion is one of my top priorities.
Exploring the Vastness of Space
Now, let’s talk about space! Due to limited resources and time constraints, I haven’t been able to work on space simulation for months. However, for those of you yearning for cosmic adventures, fret not! In Flyout’s current state, you can orbit around the first planet, but stay tuned as more space features will be introduced once everything functions seamlessly on the first planet. Some of you have also expressed an interest in rocket customization. In Flyout, rocket performance is calculated based on various factors, such as nozzle throat area, chamber temperature, fuel density, and ambient pressure, using equations obtained from reputable sources like NASA. While I haven’t found a way to calculate the effects of nozzle shape on performance just yet, I’m actively exploring this possibility.
