In July, PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) quietly changed its name to PUBG: Battlegrounds or, more completely, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds: Battlegrounds. It sounds pretty long and unnecessary, but there’s clearly a good plan behind this Krafton name change.
In an interview with PC Gamer, editor Krafton shared:
“Krafton is actively expanding the PUBG brand through a series of new experiences in this universe. Changing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds to PUBG: Battlegrounds is the first step in realizing our plan. All upcoming titles in the franchise will be called PUBG, like our next title: PUBG: New State.”

The latest game in the series, PUBG: New State, is a mobile game set in the future of 2051, years after the events of PUBG: Battlegrounds. Without a government, factions constantly clash and fight each other, leaving the world in chaos with no way out… The game is expected to be released later this year.

The upcoming PUBG: Battlegrounds will be released for free within 1 week to mark the game’s pairing with popular K-Pop girl group BlackPink. Players can download the game for free from August 10 to 16. This is also a good opportunity for Krafton to gauge player reactions before turning PUBG: Battlegrounds into a completely free-to-play game like its rivals Fortnite, Apex Legends or Call of Duty: Warzone.
