A transgender woman recently experienced a distressing incident at a GameStop store in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Tiffany Moore found herself misgendered repeatedly by an employee while returning a video game, as reported by KOB 4. Despite correcting the employee and stating her preferred pronoun, Moore was called “sir” persistently. The exchange was captured on video by another customer and has since gained traction on YouTube.

Moore, who had gone to the store in early January to return a game she had purchased for her son, expressed her frustration with the situation. As she told KOB 4, the employee’s repeated use of the wrong pronoun pushed her to boiling point. “I was so angry at that point because, literally, five or six times he had called me ‘sir.’ He got me so fuming angry, and I was cussing,” Moore shared.

Despite her emotional response in the video, Moore stands firm and does not regret her actions. She firmly believes that her reaction was justified. She said, “Yeah, I could have reacted a whole lot better. But you know what, I look back at it, and if I could, I wouldn’t change a single thing. I would do it 100,000 times again. I would kick over that display 100,000 times again. Because my actions were justified. I mean, it was blatant and malicious hate. It was blatant and malicious misgendering.”

The incident sparked a response from GameStop, with a spokesperson expressing their regret over the altercation. The company acknowledged the employee’s mistake and subsequent apology while emphasizing their commitment to inclusivity. The spokesperson stated, “Like other corporations committed to inclusiveness, we are continually learning. This incident reminds us to continue pursuing efforts to ensure GameStop remains a diverse, inclusive culture that celebrates every person’s unique value.”

For Moore, the hope is that this incident sheds light on the experiences of transgender individuals and promotes understanding. “We’re humans, just like you. We’re people just like you. We have kids. We have parents. We have brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, we’re just trying to live,” she asserted.

It is crucial for society to recognize the importance of respecting an individual’s gender identity and pronouns. Instances like these highlight the need for continued education and empathy towards the transgender community. By sharing stories such as Moore’s, we can work towards a more inclusive and accepting world.
