Stray cat simulator game was adapted into a cartoon

Stray turns the player into an orange cat and transports them to an underground city filled with bacteria, machines, and robots. With the help of a drone companion, the cat must try to avoid the pursuit of the Zurk bugs and the Sentinels.

Annapurna Animation is led by Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein, both former Disney Animation executives. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Baird compared the game to a comedy about the friendship between a cat and a robot.

Baird commented: “The film will have an element of humor and no human silhouette (as in the game). I think that’s one of the reasons why this game is so popular because you see the world through the eyes of an adorable cat. So how can we do that in the movie? We will achieve it, even if it seems impossible at times, but we know that this is the essence of the game and the key to telling the story.

Stray also has “something very moving about it” and the creators are trying to capture this by adapting the game into a movie. Millstein added that Stray was the game the animation studio chose to adapt first in part because it appealed to so many players.

Stray will be released in 2022 for PC and PlayStation. The game was nominated for six awards at The Game Awards 2022, including Game of the Year and Best Game Direction. Stray won Best Indie Game and Best Indie Debut, and received nominations for three DICE Awards and several BAFTA Awards.
