5. Super Smash Land: A Nostalgic Trip (PC)
– Created By: Dan Fornace
Super Smash Land might not appeal to all Smash Bros enthusiasts, as it pays homage to the classic Game Boy games. This game is essentially what Super Smash Bros would look like on the original 8-Bit Game Boy. The content is limited, just like the Game Boy ports of mainstream console games. Initially, you’ll have access to only four characters: Mario, Kirby, Link, and Pikachu. To unlock two additional characters (Mega Man & Vaporeon), you’ll have to put in some extra effort.
The combat mechanics in Super Smash Land are fluid and reminiscent of retro Smash games. If you have friends to play with, you can enjoy the local versus mode, accommodating up to four players. Personally, I found the standard Arcade mode to be the most enjoyable. If you don’t mind the retro graphics and gameplay, Super Smash Land offers a unique experience worth trying out. – More Information & Download
4. Super Smash Bros. Clash [MUGEN]: A Fusion of Styles (PC)
– Created By: Merk & MUGEN Community
Super Smash Bros. Clash is an impressive game built entirely on the PC MUGEN 2D fighting engine. The MUGEN engine is usually associated with Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and KOF fan games, so it was surprising to see a high-quality Smash Bros game developed on it. Although Super Smash Bros. Clash is still a work in progress, it already showcases remarkable potential. With each new version, the developer introduces changes to the roster and tweaks to the gameplay. The current roster boasts a staggering 70+ fighters, including beloved characters like Mario, Master Chief (Halo), Paul (Tekken), Crash Bandicoot, and Goku (DBZ), making it a dream come true for many fans. However, the abundance of characters may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
While Super Smash Bros. Clash is undeniably a great game, it still requires some fine-tuning. There are issues with character balancing, and certain stages could use some extra polish. Fortunately, the developer is actively working on updates, and we hope to see this fan-made game evolve into something even more extraordinary. – Download Version #4 – May 6th,2019 – Check out Merk’s YouTube channel for the latest game updates.
3. Super Smash Bros. Crusade: A Battle of Rival Fan Games (PC)
– Created By: Project Crusade Team
I’ve come across numerous debates among Smash Bros enthusiasts in online forums, arguing over which fan game is superior: Super Smash Bros. Crusade or Super Smash Flash 2 (SSF2). While my personal preference leans towards SSF2 due to its broader range of modes and smoother gameplay, I must admit that Super Smash Bros. Crusade is nothing short of amazing. With its extensive roster of over 73 characters and stunning art and graphics, Super Smash Bros. Crusade manages to outshine SSF2 in certain aspects. While some might question the inclusion of characters like WeeGee, Gooey, Tingle, and a few others, they do add a unique charm to the game.
Overall, Super Smash Bros. Crusade stands as one of the best fan games available for PC. I recommend playing both Super Smash Bros. Crusade and SSF2 so that you can make your own judgment on which game you prefer. – More Information & Download
2. Super Smash Flash 2: A Flashy Feat (PC Flash)
– Created By: McLeodGaming Team
Super Smash Flash 2 is an incredible fan-made Super Smash Bros game that utilizes the popular web browser plugin Adobe Flash. Beyond its status as one of the best Super Smash Bros fan games ever created, Super Smash Flash 2 also ranks among the top Flash games of all time.
The developers of Super Smash Flash 2 have gone above and beyond to ensure that the game feels authentic to the Smash Bros franchise. It offers all the expected modes found in official Smash games, including a wonderfully functional online mode. With a roster of 44 characters, Super Smash Flash 2 introduces a host of anime characters like Naruto, Goku, and Luffy. The characters are well-balanced, and the stages are designed to accommodate them. Despite its slightly dated visuals, I find the 16-Bit inspired pixel art designs of the characters and stages to be quite charming.
All in all, it’s hard to imagine how the developers could have created a better Super Smash Bros game using the aging Flash engine. Having played Super Smash Flash 2 for years, I must confess that part of me wanted to rank it as the number one fan game on this list. It’s an absolute must-play! – Play It Online Here! – PC Standalone Downloads
1. Project M: A Melee Masterpiece (SSB Brawl MOD Wii, PC)
– Created By: Project M Team
Project M goes beyond being a mere fan-game; it’s a fan-made MOD designed for Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Nintendo Wii. Developed with the aim of infusing Brawl with the technical brilliance and balanced gameplay of Nintendo Gamecube’s Super Smash Bros. Melee, Project M offers a unique fusion of the two games. In addition, the game reintroduces two original Melee characters: Mewtwo and Roy.
Project M has spawned a broad range of MOD builds for Brawl, all based on its code. A few years ago, Nintendo took action against Project M due to its growing popularity and temporarily shut it down. Fortunately, in 2017, the ban seemed to be lifted. To this day, support for Project M and related MODs continues to thrive.
If you happen to own a copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii, I highly recommend giving Project M a try. It’s an absolutely fantastic creation and unquestionably the best fan-made contribution to the Super Smash Bros community. No Wii hacking (Hackless) is required; simply follow the Wii installation setup guide if you’re interested in playing. – More Information, Download & Wii Installation Setup. Mirror Download Links.
Note: PC users will need to download the Dolphin Wii Emulator and acquire the Wii SSB Brawl Game ISO (I won’t provide a direct link for legal reasons; search torrent sites/Google). Additionally, you can watch this video tutorial on how to install Project M using the Dolphin emulator with mods.
Other Awesome SSB Brawl MODs
Many SSB Brawl fans enjoy the following MOD builds!
Project M EX – This MOD build adds more characters to Project M while maintaining balance. Many fans prefer Project M EX over the original version. – Video Gameplay
Super Smash Bros Infinite – This build introduces a plethora of new, wild characters to the Super Smash Bros Brawl roster. However, the gameplay in this build is not as well-balanced, with some characters appearing overpowered. – Video Gameplay
Honorable Mentions
The following games narrowly missed our top list. However, if you’ve enjoyed the games mentioned above, these titles might be worth a try as well.
Super Smash Bros. Universe Final (PC): Created By cherrim98 – Being one of the older fan games on this list, it offers a fun playing experience with a massive roster of characters. However, the art style falls short, and the game unfortunately suffers from various bugs. If you’re craving even more Smash, give it a try. – Video Gameplay.
